Making Money From Home - Part-Time or Full Time?

One question I am often asked is “Steve, should I run my new home-based business on a part-time or full time basis? Is it a good idea to give up my job and throw myself into it 100% both in commitment and time, or should I start working it just a few hours a week, part-time, initially?” Well, here’s my thoughts…

The part-time or full time question can only be answered really once I know who I answering - the answer is specific to the individual. If you the type of person who needs to ‘burn all your boats’ and put everything into something flat-out 100% of your time for you to really get results, AND you have the financial means to survive at least 6 months on any existing income or savings you, then starting your own business full time is the best way from day one for you.

On the other hand, if you have a reasonable amount of existing financial commitments and you need to maintain a certain amount of income because you don’t have the luxury of savings to fall back on, then my advice would be to definitely start part-time initially, and build up your new home based business income steadily over time until it’s at such a level that you could give up your job and then focus on your new home business full time.

That said, I have worked with people who have really got their home business up to a good new supplementary income level, all whilst holding down a job, and yet (usually because they really enjoy their job) they’ve maintained their job and continued their home based business still part-time, even though it was bringing in a healthy income.

What you certainly don’t want to do is have a heavy burden of overheads on top of you that puts obvious pressure on you to ensure you maintain paying those overheads, and then you throw on top the added pressure of giving up your job with it’s steady income to run your home-based business full-time. That’s heaping far too much pressure on you to make your new business a success, and believe me when I say, you don’t want to start a new business with that initial financial pressure. Starting your own business will already have many new headaches, things to learn, stressful issues, etc - don’t compound all these things by also putting yourself under unnecessary financial pressure as well.

I respect the challenge is that when you’re in a job you really don’t like, there is naturally going to be the natural temptation to throw in that job for your new exciting new business, all with the added enjoyment of working from home much more. But you need to resist that temptation to chuck in the job, at least in the short-term and channel the dislike you may have for your job into motivation to get your new business at home making money as soon as possible. Because then (and only then) once the money is starting to roll on, you have the choices to decide if you then go full time with your new business, with the huge plus that at that point you know your new business is making enough to take the strain of your financial commitments.

These are not all of the things that you will have to do to achieve success with your home based business but they are the most important ones. It does not matter what your home business is, without one of these things, you will never be successful. Anyone can have an internet business but not everyone will achieve success. Why start your own business at home?

Clearly, getting your own business from home up ‘n running can reap huge rewards, satisfaction and benefits, but why should you consider starting your own business working from home? Well just consider your other options? …working from an office, or factory? Working from your car with many hours on the road? It’s only when you consider the other ‘ways to work’ that working from home with your own business seems so attractive.

Let’s look more closely at comparing working from home to your other options

COST SAVINGS - Running your business from an office or any other commercial location involves cost - often big cost when you add up rent or possible commercial mortgage payments, rates, electricity and other utility costs, communication costs - phone, fax, internet - all these costs are often much higher when you are working remotely from a commercial property.

Working from home you can cut much of these costs down dramatically because you will likely be paying residential tariffs for all these outgoings, which invariably work out much cheaper than commercial tariffs.

Also, don’t forget you can actually charge yourself ‘rent’ and a percentage of utility costs for using part of your home as a working environment - ‘home office’. What that means is a percentage of what you pay in your mortgage can be offset against any business tax you pay because you can claim a certain amount as rent, etc, even though you’re working from home. Ask your financial advisor to get more info on this.

MORE EFFECTIVE USE OF TIME - How much time do you (or would you spend) travelling to work? Apart from perhaps the odd phone call on your mobile, or sending a text or two, it’s hard to be effective with your time travelling to work, especially if you drive to your workplace.

I key benefit of working from home is you can get up later (making it more lifestyle orientated), and yet still start earlier. Why? simply because you will have cut out all the ‘dead time’ travelling to and from work. You could be working from home, more refreshed, more effective, and certainly more productive.

QUALITY OF LIFE - One of the challenges of working in these fast-moving times is how much our quality of life, particularly family life suffers. How much time do you spend now away from home because of your work when, if you were working from home, even taking a tea-break means you get to see your partner and possibly your children more.

My father loved me and my sisters deeply, but had a high-powered city job, and so left in the morning to catch a train before we were awake, and invariably didn’t get in ’til after we were asleep, often unfortunately not seeing us awake for days on end! Now that wasn’t really his fault because his ‘job’ demanded he work a long-distance away, but if you had the choice to start your own business working from home, allowing you to spend much more time with those you love, doesn’t that make far more sense?

Working At Home Tip 2 - Create ‘Work Time

So how will you squeeze time to work from home into your already crammed day? The first thing is to identify how much time you can give over to your ‘work-from-home business’, then create a work plan and/or schedule.

First, set some ground rules with yourself, family and friends. Regardless of whatever you home business is, start adopting the attitude you have a ‘business at home’ and as such you (and those around you) need to respect this. If you have children at home, you are now a ‘working father’ or ‘working mother’, even if your office is “home”.

One of the first things to set up is your answering-machine. Use your answering machine consistently to screen calls and prevent interruptions. Learn how to say: “Sorry, I have to work!”… because you do.

Next, set ‘office hours’ - times when you solely focus on your work. You could decide on regular days and times or, if your life is more unpredictable, identify the times when you will be able to do some work, even if these are different every day.

Structure and being consistent with your ‘work times’ is key and (this bit is vital) when work time comes around, turn your back on other demands. Don’t start washing the car, going to the shops, cleaning the house, etc - go to your work space and go to work! You may find it helpful to set exact times so that you carry on working for an allotted time span.

Draw out a week’s agenda or calendar as a Work Schedule and be sure to factor in… - times of day you’re naturally most productive - times when there are least amount of distractions - other priorities, like time with partner and kids, - consider other draws on time like making time for health and fitness, and of course social time with your partner and family.

Identify right up front what might knock you off your work schedule and be prepared for those factors; possibly build in some spare time to allow for eventualities that you hadn’t planned for, which always crop up in life. Think about what factors could prevent you from achieving the work schedule that week, and try and to build in a ‘plan B’ if they do crop up. Also be realistic with yourself. If you only have three hours a week to work on your business, then that’s what you schedule. Just make the most of that time, and ensure you use every minute in a productive way.

You may be reading this saying “but I can’t find any free time?” If that’s the case, answer this question honestly to yourself “Which is more important to me - earning an income from home, or all the “other stuff?” Never forget we all have just 24 hours in a day - it’s how we each choose to use that time that makes the difference. You need to decide that ‘working from home’ IS important. I suspect you’re filling all your day right now as it is, so If you want work time you’ll have to spend less time doing some things, or completely eliminate some activities from your schedule. You won’t be the first facing this dilemma - what you need to ask yourself is … “what am I prepared to give up to give my business time and move it along the road to success?” …and yes you will have to and cut down on…

…TV-time - aren’t there shows you could live without? …E-mail and Internet surfing - if they are not related to your business. …Kids’ activities - review and consider dropping all but the essential ones (probably some the kids don’t enjoy anyway!) …Shopping - do it one swoop, or order online and have it delivered. …Cleaning - delegate chores, hire help, create a system

Here are some other terrific ways to free up more time, and just an extra 15 minutes a day can make a big difference: - Practice saying “no” more often - it’s hard I know, but it will be an invaluable lesson to getting better control of your time. - If your home role involves doing much of the cooking, then plan menus, prepare food ahead of time and max out your freezer. - Create a regular “Daddy/Mummy Night”, when the kids get quality time with their Dad or Mum, while you get to work uninterrupted. - Use a daily/weekly/monthly planner that works for you and your personality (paper, electronic, scraps of paper… just make sure it helps you stay organised). - Schedule regular “work retreats” …go to a relative’s home, or hotel, and work for one or more days without interruption.

For all of us that ‘work from home’, finding time to work - and sticking to it - is about the most challenging aspect of working from home. It will be an ongoing struggle but the better structured and organised you are, the more likely you are to achieve your weekly work schedule. In the end, it will be clearly worth with everyone in the family benefiting as you enjoy the fruits of your success. Just roll up your sleeves, stay focused and just do it!

How to get Targeted Traffic to Your Website!

Everyone who has a website knows that to have sales you must have traffic, but not just any traffic it has to be targeted traffic.

Targeted traffic involves enticing visitors to your site that are actually interested in the content of your website. If people are interested in buying tropical fish they will find websites about buying tropical fish interesting.

There are a range of techniques for getting traffic that is targeted.

Forums - If you are an active participant in a forum you can obtain targeted traffic through the link to your website you can add to the signature. If you spam you are likely to get banned. However, if you add value by joining in debates and answering questions you may even come to be known as an expert. If others like your style, the quality of your posts or even the promotional text in your signature you can generate targeted traffic that doesn’t cost you anything.

Reciprocal Linking - For most product websites there are usually many other related websites which aren’t direct competitors. You can contact the owners of these websites to ask for a reciprocal link. While a number of them will simply ignore your request, you will start to build up some useful links over time. Again, this can provide a source of targeted traffic.

E-zines provide a ready made source of targeted traffic because they are nearly always focused on a particular niche. Different e-zines tend to have different conversion rates, so it is good to do a test advertising run to check the return on investment, before spending too much on advertising with a particular e-zine.

Newsletters - As well as using other web owners e-zines, you should consider starting your own newsletter. In this way, you can build up your own list of targeted people and when the size of the list grows you can start selling your own advertising as well.

E-Books: Often used, these are usually free informational books for your clients and for others to give away free if they leave your links in the book itself. You can place links back to your website in the books you sell or give to your clients.

Joint Ventures: Contact online marketers looking for new products to sell. They often have large mailing lists with eager to buy customers. Normally they are willing to email their list for a cut of the sale price. This works particularly well with informational products. It has several advantages. It can give a very sizeable boost to both your sales and mailing list within a very short period.

Buying traffic through Pay Per Click (PPC) is usually the fastest way to get extremely targeted traffic. As you have control over the keywords, you can be sure that the visitors are looking for exactly what you can provide. This tends to result in a much higher conversion rate.

If the aim of your website is to make money then you really do want to increase the amount of targeted traffic it receives. By using some or all of these techniques, over time, that is exactly what you will achieve.

Let me guess, you did your marketing routine again today in hopes you’ll get some response? But that gut feeling your getting says your spinning your wheels cause your not seeing the results you were told you would get.

Part-Time or Full Time With My Home Based Business?

Yes, there is huge value to being able to 100% focus all your time and energy on your new business, especially when you’re working from home, and the rewards will mean that you business will grow exponentially by being full time over working your business part-time. There is one caveat to this; you need to use all your new ‘full time’ time commitment to really apply to your business - and I mean REALLY apply your energies in a focused way.

I have helped people who have gone from part-time to full time with their new businesses and this increased time input has resulted in them being less ‘effective and productive’ when they are full time than they did when they were part-time. “How is this possible?” I hear you say - it’s a common issue many self-employed individuals have when they suddenly make the decision to run their business on 100% of their time; they suddenly fill their days with ’stuff’ that is ineffective and unproductive to their business; ultimately their putting in the hours but not actually doing the things that will improve and increase their incomes.

Some people have said to me “I’m doing more hours but my business isn’t increasing”, and the key reason is that yes the hours maybe being put in, but how productively those hours are being used is the key.

There are only TWO reasons why someone doesn’t get the increase in business as they should…

1. They are doing the wrong things OR 2. They are simply not doing enough of the right things.

My information is intended to help you not make the mistakes to do the wrong things when you run a business working from home, so if when you go from part-time to full time you don’t get the growth in your business with all these extra hours being put in, it’s likely you are simply not doing enough of the right things with all your additional hours you’re now inputting.

It’s really easy to be ‘busy being busy’ but the real key is to identify what actions in your business really make you the money and try to do those particular actions as often as you can throughout your working day and week.

Get into the habit of questioning your actions by saying to yourself “is what I’m doing now really help me to grow my business AND income?” and answer the question to yourself with full honesty. It’s not enough to just ‘think’ what you’re doing is helping your business - is that action clearly and unquestionably improving your income? Because if it’s not, dump it and get on with something that is!

It’s all too easy to get into the pattern of being busy without being effective. The key is to stay focused on all the things that improve your income, and dump or put on the back-burner all the things that distract you from doing the things that increase your income.
